Someone explained to me recently that Hatha Yoga evolved as a kind of side project to seated meditation.
The story goes like this: a bunch of guys in India spent the large part of every day in meditation. Sitting all day took a toll on their bodies; to keep things flowing, they would get up and stretch themselves out. Eventually this got more organized and turned into a practice unto itself…
Fast forward several thousand years and we have very much the same situation: millions of knowledge workers who sit for hours a day… coding, writing, creating, adding up numbers. Except they’re not in a quiet place looking for the self. They’re in highly charged environments, under stress and facing tight deadlines.
And just like the yogis and ascetics back in India, knowledge workers do pretty serious harm to their bodies if they don’t get up and move. We’re designed to run, climb, carry heavy things and walk for hours on end. We’re not designed to sit huddled in front of an electronic device 10 hours a day, pumped on adrenaline, caffeine and sugar.
You know where I’m going with this. Yoga is the antidote to that sagging, pale, tired IT worker body you’re developing. And yes, Yoga will make you stop feeling crappy. It will help with your headache, tendinitis and carpal tunnel. And it will make your back stop hurting. Maybe forever. It will unbreak your body, make your mind sharper, take away stress and maybe even make you feel sexy.
If Yoga isn’t your thing, hell, do anything: swim, walk to work, dance. Just get away from your screen for even an hour and shake it out. Please…
