I watched a lot of TV when I was a kid.
I remember being confused by the musical interludes that happened in the middle of shows like Scooby Doo and The Partridge Family.
One minute, everyone is running from the ghost or the evil sea captain. Or getting bad grades in school. Then they break into song, with psychedelic pictures and flash backs of David Cassidy smiling or Scooby running in one place.
Instead of the songs being things like “oh oh, we’re running from the ghost”, which is what kids would dig, it was always something like “hey girl, I miss your smile.” Complicated songs about relationships. Stuff not even teenagers can express.
Somebody must have thought this would work because the Mystery Gang were teenagers. So why not play some teen-style rock songs? They might even get popular — like the Archies!
Except kids stop watching Scooby Doo when they start listening to teenager songs. So as kids we inevitably ended up bored and confused, bouncing up and down on the couch cushions to “girl, remember how happy we were”.
Case in point… Scooby and Shaggy scramble in a haunted barn to the groovy sounds of “tell me, tell me”.
